A fine quality Qajar polychrome lacquer papier-mâché penbox (qalamdan).

The cover of this penbox is of typical form with rounded ends and sliding compartment for calligraphic implements. The top and two sides of the cover are exquisitely painted and gilt with 5 medalions on each of these 3 sides. The subject matter shows a series of scenes of the popular Persian story of Shayk Sanaan.

Some show the meeting of Shaykh Sanaan and the Christian maiden surrounded by followers and attendants, others show the maiden alone or with a bird drinking from a cup,  others with scenes of Angels in the background. All these superbly painted depictions stand out against the finely laquered and gilt field of scrolling floral and vegetal decoration.

The sliding compartment is likewise intricately painted with scrolling gilt leaves and floral decorations on a dark laquered monochrome base.
