A Steel Ottoman Knee and Leg Guard, 16th Century – Turkey.

This Early Ottoman piece of armour was worn as part of a complete suit. It was meant to be worn on the knee to protect the knee-cap and to be wrapped around the thigh.

The entire suit usually consisted of plates and cast iron parts connected together with iron chain maille. This piece displays all of these components. The knee guard is engraved with split palmette designs within a lozenge shape. A symbol of Saint Irene arsenal is engraved at the top of the knee-cap guard.
