An 18th Century Engraved and Enamelled Belt Buckle -Late Safavid or Early Zand.

This undulated lobed belt buckle consists of a very large oval central cabochon rock crystal. It is engraved on its verso with “You Granter of Requests, You Venerated All Seeing, You Maker of Goodness, You One” within a stylized set of pointed arched reserves.

This central rock crystal is framed by a row of small natural Nishapur Turquoise stones inset on the metal body of the belt buckle. Beyond the frame a field of very finely enamelled floral and vegetal decorations in dark blue and gold reach the extremeties of the lobed buckle. Probably a fabric belt would have been sewn on two projecting bars on the backside of the buckle.
Some discolouration to the natural Turquoises.
