A rare 17th Century Ottoman enamelled silver knife with scabbard.

This ornamental silver dagger consists of a hilt, steel blade and it’s original scabbard. The scabbard is decorated differently on front and back sides. The front has raised silver motifs with blue and green enamelled circular roundels and set with turquoise cabochon-like stones. The back is nielloed in the typical early Van Armenian style.

The hilt is decorated in the same fashion as the front of the scabbard but with a characteristically large turquoise inset stone. The steel blade is plain, with a hallmark in the shape of a stylized leaf, most probably a makers mark.Another more elaborate example of the same form and size can be seen at the metropolitan museum of art, item number: 17.190.821a,b.
