A Rare Silver Mounted Ivory Case or Vessel, Ceylon. Circa 17th century

An exquisite hinged ivory case or vessel comprised of two parts: the cylindrical body tapering down to a domical base, and a slightly raised top forming the lid. The hollowed body is carved from a single piece of ivory which is externally incised with simple circular bands. The body lid and finial are all decorated with applied silver filigree mounts in the shape of abstract vegetal motifs. The silver hinge on the other hand, is cast and engraved in matching vegetal patterns.

The vessel could have been used to carry a highly sought after and rare medicinal substance or could have been an external case to a glass or metal container for a highly prized perfume essence. In all cases, it is obvious it was an object of luxury destined to be an esteemed receptacle.

The condition is excellent.
