Iznik pottery dish

This intact large Iznik pottery dish is typically characterized by its patterns and some runny colours of its glazes. The used colours are subject to the use of indiginous oxides found in Iznik itself and its environs.

The circular dish sits on a typical raised conical foot. The design mainly consists of a symmetric composition consisting of central pair of tulips with two carnations below and two daisy-like flowers above. These three pairs of flowers are connected by two sweeping stems of small blue flowers. The outer rim of the dish has a wide band of golden horn design decorations in black underglaze, contrasting with the pastel field. The back of the dish is decorated with small widely dispersed alternating green and blue elements.
