An extremely rare and large ivory Mughal box, Delhi – India. Circa 19th century.

This amazing 45 cm long box is made out of 4 massive ivory carved single sides and a lid and a base. The minute carving of the lid and sides is in the characteristic Mughal Jalli window style.

The lid consists of 5 rectangular symmetric divisions alternating with carved openwork patterns. These 5 divisions are surrounded by continuous openwork. The sides are similarly divided and carved. The base rests on 4 legs carved in the shape of elephants. Despite the fine thickness of the ivory of which the sides are crafted, a lock and 3 hinges are screwed to secure the box when locked. The workmanship of this spectacular box is akin to the work of the famous ivory master carver Lala Faqir Chand.

The condition is excellent.
